The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a process with four stages:
Inquiry
The first stage, also known as the Pre-Catechumenate, is a time to ask questions and learn about Catholicism.
Catechumenate
The second stage is a time to learn about the Catholic tradition and teachings, and to grow in faith. During this stage, participants are known as Catechumens.
Purification and Enlightenment
The third stage takes place during Lent and is a time for prayer, reflection, and spiritual direction.
Mystagogy
The fourth stage is a time for newly initiated participants to explore their experience of being fully initiated. This stage involves participating in Sunday Eucharist and catechesis.
The RCIA process ends with the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation, which usually takes place at the Easter Vigil Mass. The Sacraments of Initiation mark the beginning of a new life in Christ.
